I took the subway back to downtown and walked to the Love River which flows through Kaohsiung City. With the wharfs, bicycle lanes, the Love Pier, and Rose Basilica along the banks, it’s one of Kaohsiung’s most visited areas.
Below is a pic of Rose Basilica that I passed on the way to the river. The Rose Basilica is one of three major basilicas in Asia and was voted as the most beautiful building in Taiwan. It is the first and largest cathedral in Taiwan. This building mixes Gothic style and Romanesque style, is carved with exquisite frescoes, and includes colorful round windows and rose windows.
The pics below are of Love River. The third pic in the series, though hard to see, is of The Flying Dragon Fish Statue. It is the main lamp in the annual lantern show firstly held in 2001. The shape of the dragon head and fish body means Kaohsiung will transform into an international oceanic and harbor metropolis, so this lamp is conserved. At each hour, it plays music and color-varying lights, which is now a landmark of Love River.
Located on Love River estuary, No. 12 dock was originally a vacant cargo dock, but now is the Love Pier and is a place for entertainment.
I walked around a bit and then caught the subway and went to the airport. The Kaohsiung International Airport is a medium-sized airport with two terminals; international & domestic. I flew out of the international one and that terminal was built in 1997 so its fairly new, nice, and clean though bars/restaurants is lacking. I flew back to Hong Kong and then took the train/subway to Shenzhen.
And that’s it! This is the last post of my Spring Festival; it encompassed Thailand, Viet Nam, Singapore, and Taiwan. Which one was my favorite? Not sure, they were all unique…
But don't worry, more posts are coming as I have been to local areas since...
pic 18 years ago of tammie...just beautiful. out all day yesterday--unreal day yesterday. love this cathredral. the rose window is one of the most beaut. stained glass windows.love the water taxi. you have been to so many places and seen so many wonderful things. i am so jealous..........
ReplyDeleteThis is Duke. Also love the picture of Tammie. Surprised to see that there is both an international and domestic air terminal. Is the domestic terminal just for intra-Taiwan travel, as I don't picture the island to be large enough to need a domestic terminal?
ReplyDeleteGreg, your Spring Festival travels will be with you for the rest of your life. Mom still remembers Okinawa fondly and that was over 40 years ago, although it's funny but I don't hear Janice mentioning it much - joke!
